Traditional and Alternative Medicine Scientific Session

Session on Reiki

Reiki is a form of energy healing that is considered pseudoscientific and falls under the category of alternative medicine. Originating in Japan, Reiki practitioners utilize palm healing or hands-on healing to transfer what they believe to be a “universal energy” from themselves to the patient, with the goal of promoting emotional or physical healing. Despite its popularity, Reiki has been labeled as quackery and is often used as an example of pseudoscience in academic literature. Clinical studies have not demonstrated any effectiveness of Reiki in treating medical conditions such as cancer, diabetic neuropathy, anxiety, or depression. Therefore, it is important to note that Reiki should not be used as a replacement for conventional medical treatments. The lack of concrete evidence supporting the efficacy of Reiki therapy compared to a placebo is further compounded by methodological flaws in studies that have reported positive effects.
