Scientific Sessions

Diabetes mellitus type 1  is a chronic condition in which the immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. This results in little to no insulin production. Insulin is a hormone that helps regulate blood sugar levels by allowing glucose to enter cells from the bloodstream. Without enough insulin, blood sugar levels can become dangerously high.

Diabetes mellitus type 2 is a chronic condition characterized by insulin resistance and relative insulin deficiency. Unlike type 1 diabetes, where the pancreas produces little to no insulin, people with type 2 diabetes often have adequate insulin production but their bodies don’t use it effectively. Over time, the pancreas may struggle to keep up with the body’s insulin needs.

Clinical endocrinology is a branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of endocrine disorders, which involve the glands that produce hormones. These hormones regulate many critical functions in the body, including metabolism, growth, reproduction, and mood.

Cardiovascular endocrinology is a specialized field that examines the intersection of endocrine disorders and cardiovascular diseases. This area focuses on how hormonal imbalances and endocrine conditions impact cardiovascular health and vice versa.

Diabetes and glucose metabolism are closely related topics that center around how the body manages blood sugar levels.

Neuroendocrinology is a field that studies the interactions between the nervous system and the endocrine system, particularly how the brain regulates hormone release from endocrine glands. The pituitary gland, often referred to as the “master gland,” plays a central role in this interaction by controlling various other endocrine glands.

Pediatric endocrinology is a specialized field of medicine that focuses on diagnosing and treating endocrine disorders in children and adolescents. The endocrine system in children is crucial for growth, development, and overall health, so managing endocrine disorders early can significantly impact a child’s development and quality of life.

Thyroid disorders and thyroid cancer are significant areas of concern within endocrinology. The thyroid gland, located in the neck, plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism through hormone production.
